Massage Therapist

At One Tribe, our therapists have plenty of time in between clients to ensure you can give as much attention to them as possible. They are trusting us to help them get through their pain, discomfort and patterns in the body and you, as their guide on this journey will have unrushed time to hear their story and provide the care and guidance they require to get the best results.

Your background consists of years of experience with people, caring and listening and you are now licensed as an LMT here in Arizona with a heart as big as south Tempe! Many of our customers are yoga students and already have a great understanding of their bodies which will make your interaction with them fun and exciting, but you’ll also get customers who are new to this journey and will expect your professionalism to help them better understand their patterns and suggestive remedies tailored to them.

connecting deeper w/ feedback

We believe very much so in the way we teach here, and we strive to keep ourselves, and each other on brand and in touch with the way we connect with our students! One way we do this, is that we take each other’s classes, and with permission of the teacher, we give them feedback on the class afterwards in a quiet setting. You will learn more about the feedback process, but understand it’s intention is to help the teacher grow and connect on a deeper level with the students.

We have noticed that teachers tend to fall into habit patterns themselves and without the support and guidance of their peers, they may never be able to reach a higher potential for themselves and their quality of teaching. This feedback process, when done effectively, and received well, can help to continuously transform the teacher’s abilities to connect and will help grow their classes, thus helping them reach more students overall and creating a superior healing environment.

You will be invited to participate in this immediately following your class, so please be prepared to sit and reflect with the tribe in the spirit of feeling love, and loved & find growth from within. namaste.

the one tribe yoga brand

Since we are Ashtanga and Anapana Meditation based, we can always call upon these practices to see if we’re on brand or off brand with how we like to teach yoga here. ONE TRIBE has a unique way of teaching to students, and in order to keep this distinction and reach our ideal customers, there are some key areas that we feel help us keep this distinction:

ON BRAND

Building a balanced flow sequence that wrings the body out. We have found that by starting off with grounded postures in our SUN C allows for all level students to find their flow and start building strength and heat right out of the gate. Since there are 12-16+ postures in a SUN C, there is time to introduce creativity later in the sequence. An example of a balanced beginning would be from Down Dog to Crescent Warrior in to Warrior 2, Reverse Warrior, Prayer Twist… .

Using music sparingly during Hot Vinyasa is a big one – Too many teachers put on a playlist, and then just start teaching, rarely adjusting the volume or types of music that is being used. At ONE TRIBE we choose our music to help create an emotional connection to the students, to let them music help guide them on their journey. And the louder the music, the more impact this can have on the students. Which means, that we carefully lower and turn off the volume when teaching, and slowly introduce it when it’s time to let the students flow on their own. It’s an art, and can really make the difference in a class.

Speak clear and simple language – This is one that will always come in feedback sessions, is that the teacher is talking alot during class, using too many words to describe a simple move, or call a pose multiple names within that instance of time. Keep it simple. The less we are talking, the more they can process and feel. What they can feel, they can heal.

Adjustments & assisting – We are very much a hands on studio. Learn and keep getting better with your adjustments to help CONNECT a student to a posture, not CORRECT. One mistake we see alot are teachers trying to tell or force a student into a specific pose. We don’t know what they have going on inside of them, so best to bring a sense of connection or lengthening, rather than a sense of them doing something wrong. We want to inspire and encourage them to find it themselves!

Moments of silence – This is huge, and can be someone’s big breakthrough moment on the mat, just like meditation can provide. Giving them space, or letting your words land in the room for a few moments can really effect a practitioners experience. This is a tough one, but one that we’ll keep reminding you of during feedback sessions : )

Sharing stories and benefits of yoga. One great way to get student to take a journey on the mat, is to inspire them with relate able stories of why we’re doing what we’re doing in there. This will encourage the teacher to be always learning themselves, on and off the mat through education, reading, etc..

OFF BRAND

Modeling – We don’t model on ONE TRIBE, this takes the student out of their body and feeling and into an immediate state of comparison or how they are ‘suppose to do the pose’. There are occasions where we’ll model a sequence with students while everyone is flowing on their own, but never while we are teaching the sequence. This will get the students in the habit of looking at the teacher instead of listening to the teacher, and eventually, listening to what’s going on inside.

Speaking over the music – Try to not compete with the music. It’s an art form and can help create a very emotional class by using music sparingly rather than just a playlist playing in the background.

Bringing attention to someone during class – There’s never a need to call anyone out, or say things like ‘Look at what John is doing, this is what we’re trying to do”. This is where using clear & simple language helps everyone.

Talking about yourself – Try to keep your personal life out of the classroom. Any stories should always be about another individual or group, etc. Very rarely has a personal story been able to touch the entire class in a way that is inspiring or encouraging for them to relate to.

Building an imbalanced sequence that isn’t obtainable easily, or doesn’t allow the students to find a flow and build heat. As in Ashtanga, we want to build our sequences from grounded to balancing, with something novel thrown in as well to keep things exciting for the students and stretch them a little past their comfort zone. We’re not here to show off our creativity, but rather get them moving and experiencing their bodies and moving with their breath. We find that starting grounded and adding in challenges later allow for this. An example of an off-brand sequence would be starting off from Down dog, right into Warrior C and then Half Moon.

arc of vinyasa

When you feel at a class at One Tribe there is a sense of building heat akin to building a campfire. This arc shows the rise and fall of a hot vinyasa class and slow flow. The arc keeps it sensual & connected so the students can slowly and continuously be building heat so we can use to find an edge, and then soften, cool and surrender to it. This natural rhythm is also shared with other parts of the experience like the sequencing, volume of the teacher’s voice,  volumes of music and of course, lighting.

HOT VINYASA – This class slowly builds heat using WARM UPS,  SUN A, B (with slight variations sometimes) and a SUN C (12-16+ postures) all flowing on their own after you take them through the sequence a few times. Then we enter a 6-10 minute chunk of class where we hold them in strong, dynamic postures and take them to their edge (even if they fall out of the pose, teach them to soften). Then Yin > Svanasana. There should be an ARC to the class. Slowly building, getting hot, then cooling down.

SLOW FLOW – Similar build as HOT VINYASA, but only SUN A & B (flow on own), then a Static C as a group (5-8 breaths in each pose, 12-16 poses). Then Yin > Svanasana. There should be an ARC to the class. Slowly building, getting hot, then cooling down.

YIN / STRETCH – 4-6 minute floor poses the entire time. Svanasana
